Steamboat Springs is a city and the county seat of Routt County in Colorado. It also goes by the names of "The Boat", "Steamboat" and "Ski Town USA". With a population of barely 10,000 residents, the area is nonetheless internationally known as a winter ski destination. Tourists flock to the Steamboat Ski Area on Mount Werner. Access to the city is through the Yampa Valley Airport and U.S. Highway 40. The luxury Steamboat Springs hotels are situated in close proximity to ski slopes and other attractions in the area.
A number of geothermal hot springs are found in the area around the Yampa Valley. The bubbling of a spring close to the library sounded like a steamboat to earlier settlers and the spring was called Steamboat Spring. The city was eventually named after the spring. Visitors should have a drink or a meal in the Steamboat Yacht Club, a restaurant located on the Yampa River, which was affectionately called after the spring, that has since stopped bubbling.
The only "steamboat" in town is in a playground in West Lincoln Park. The city does, however, still have two hot springs, one being at Old Town Hot Springs and both are open to the public. The second hot spring is Strawberry Park Hot Springs, which has natural rock features and two pools. With little artificial light in the area, the Strawberry Park Hot Springs offer visitors to the luxury Steamboat Springs hotels the opportunity for stargazing.
Many world-class skiing competitions are held here, as the conditions are excellent. Two Alpine Skiing World Cup competitions took place here during the 1980s. Visitors at the luxury Steamboat Springs hotels can bring their own skis or hire them from the hotel. Ski storage is available when equipment is not in use.
The Yampa River, which flows through the middle of the town, is popular for all kinds of water sports. Guests can go fishing, tubing, rafting or kayaking. A 4-mile whitewater run goes through the town and many kayakers have gone down this run. The Yampa River Festival takes place annually during the first week of June. International competitors arrive for the kayak rodeo, which is a play boating competition. The Crazy River Dog Contest is part of this festival as is a downriver race. Visitors, who have an interest in history, can visit the historical buildings in the city. The Christian Science Society is listed on the National Register of Historical Places.
The Steamboat Ski&Resort Corporation operates the Steamboat Ski Area in the Routt National Forest. This major ski area is located on Mount Werner, a mountain in the Park Range. The area has 165 trails over 2,965 acres and beginners as well as experienced skiers will find a trail suitable to their level of fitness. Visitors can experience the Mavericks Super Pipe, a popular snowboard/skiing super pipe. Take the kids to the Gondola Ski School and Kids Vacation Center, or spend an afternoon at the Yampa River Botanic Park.
The rooms in luxury Steamboat Springs hotels all have fireplaces, creating a cozy ambience indoors when your backyard is under snow. The hotels have their own restaurants on site where guests can dine, but eateries are also on offer at other venues. Order a meal from room service or join the other guests for a buffet breakfast. Kitchens are fully equipped and visitors can prepare their own meals. Enjoy them in front of the gas fireplace or on your private balcony. Cable TV and free Internet are available in many rooms.
Play billiards in the recreational area or keep fit in the fitness center. Golf courses are nearby and sauna and jacuzzis are free to use for every guest. Many hotels are gay friendly and also go out of their way to make access for disabled guests easier. Guests can rest assured that laundry, dry cleaning and ironing services are available. Parking is available and free and select hotels allow guests to bring along a favorite pet. The front desk is open for 24 hours and guests will be greeted by a friendly clerk at all times. Express check-in or check-out is on offer for those in a hurry. Elevators transport guests to higher floors. Business centers with fax and photocopying services are at hand if urgent business matters arise.
